How To Manage Waste Sustainably At Home

Posted on: 12 July 2022

The most prevalent theme in sustainability is going green. Besides using eco-friendly equipment, energy, and utilities, explore different sustainable solutions to make your home eco-friendlier. A good starting point is understanding the 3Rs in reusing, recycling, and reducing then implementing them in your waste management strategy at home.

Here are 4 tips to help reinforce green waste management solutions in your household.

1. Take Care of Your Food Wastes

If you do a lot of home cooking, you'll have a lot of food scraps. Learn how to dispose of or reuse these wastes to make your home more sustainable. For example, if you have a kitchen garden, you can use vegetable scraps as manure or re-grow them for more produce. You can learn different recipes that use these vegetable parts to make delicious meals. Be creative and research such recipes to reduce food waste. You can also make other things like skincare or home improvement products from these wastes.

2. Recycle and Reuse

Recycle and reuse are the core terms used in a green economy. Besides food wastes, plastic, paper, and cartons are other wastes that you will find regularly in your home. Learn how to dispose of these wastes, recycle, or reuse them in your home. Use the hierarchy of wastes to understand where you should place each item. You can save money by creating different household items like vases or containers for storage. If you cannot use any of these methods, ensure you incinerate the waste properly to avoid causing harm to the environment.

3. Limit and Reduce Your Wastes

Learn how to avoid and minimize your waste through new cooking methods and recipes, redesigning certain waste materials, and minimizing single-use wastes. For example, avoid packaging where you use it once and dispose of it. Instead, use reusable bags that can carry your groceries several times without adding to your waste.

4. Clean, Categorize and Organize Regularly

Lastly, regular cleaning will help you identify how to reuse your waste around the home. If you have clothes, shoes, or other household items you wish to dispose of but are still in good condition, donate or repair them for further use. Clear out your backyard and garage and categorize them according to their usefulness. It will help you decide how to use each item or if you must dispose of the items.

To lead an environmentally friendly lifestyle, use these tips to have an eco-friendlier home through better waste management solutions.
